Clinical obervation is required to create an individuals specifically tailored treatment plan but with current and appropriate observational tools a plan can be developed addressing evolving skills.
The National Research Council describes four beneficial aspects of speech therapy:
- It should begin early in a child's life and be frequent
- Rooted in practical experience in the child's life
- Encourage spontaneous communication
- Communication skills learned during speech therapy should be generalizable to multiple situations.
Thus, any speech therapy program should include practice in many different places implemented by multiple caregivers. This allows for transition and carry over of the skills acquired. For speech therapy to be most successful, caregivers should practice exercises during daily routines in the home, school, and community. Speech-language therapists can give specific examples of how best to successfully incorporate skills throughout a child's day. |
